Dental Bridges

Dental bridges are an excellent, permanent solution for people with gaps in their smile. They can also be a fantastic fixed alternative to dentures for those only missing a few teeth.

A dental bridge spans – or ‘bridges’ – the gap left by one or more missing teeth. The bridge is attached to the natural teeth on either side of the gap and has replacement teeth fixed to it.

Why Might I Need a Dental Bridge?

Missing teeth can be both physically and psychologically debilitating.
There are a number of ways in which a dental bridge can help:

How Does a Dental Bridge Procedure Work?

A Dental Bridge Procedure Takes Course Over Two Appointments.

During the initial appointment, the anchoring teeth (those that support the bridge) are prepared and impressions are taken of the area. The anchoring teeth are reshaped so that the crowns of the dental bridge fit over them perfectly in the following appointment. We send the impressions to our local lab where they specially create your unique dental bridge.

In the second appointment, we ensure the bridge fits perfectly in every way before cementing it in place.

Is a Dental Bridge Procedure Painful?

During the initial appointment, your mouth is numbed so that no pain or discomfort is felt, and a temporary bridge is put in place until your permanent one is ready. After this first appointment, you may feel some discomfort in the gums around the reshaped teeth, but nothing more than what over-the-counter painkillers can handle.

How Long Does a Dental Bridge Last?

Dental bridges should last for around five to 15 years, depending on how good your oral hygiene is. As with natural teeth, it’s important that you make a habit out of brushing, flossing and rinsing to maximise the lifespan of your dental bridge and to prevent decay in the area.

A check-up every six months with one of our friendly dentists is also recommended for optimal dental health.

What if My Dental Bridge Is Hurting?

It’s important that you make an appointment with one of our dentists as soon as you notice any discomfort or pain around your dental bridge. Before we can determine the cause, we’ll need to examine your mouth and dental bridge. If the bridge is new, it could be an issue with your bite that needs a minor alteration. It could simply be a loose bridge, or that decay has set in under the crowns that support the bridge.

If ever you experience pain or discomfort in your teeth or gums, make an appointment with Walloon Dental straight away. It’s never a good idea to let these things linger.
