Making your child’s trip to the dentist fun and positive
It’s not uncommon for many people to feel anxious or stressed before a visit with the dentist, and to put off the appointment as long as they can, often to the detriment of their dental health. This is why it’s so important that your child’s first trips to the dentist are fun and positive, so they don’t grow up fearing the dental chair.
The best way to achieve this is to have them come in to see one of our dentists early in their development, before any issues with their teeth have occurred. The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends that children first see a dentist when their baby teeth erupt or when they turn one – whichever comes first.
We like to deal with the simple things on their first visit, which is why it’s great if it’s just a regular check-up. It gives us the opportunity to build a relationship with the child and familiarise them with dentistry in a fun and playful manner.
As a bonus, they’ll get to play with the controls and go for a ride in the chair! And after the appointment, we have a special treasure chest from which they can choose a present. The aim is to make them feel comfortable and relaxed at the clinic and develop a trusting and friendly bond with their dentist and the assistant.
