What Are My Teeth Whitening Options?

If you’re unhappy with the general appearance of your teeth book a consultation with one of our friendly dentists. At the appointment they will assess your teeth and learn your desired outcomes; before creating a treatment plan designed to suit to you and your budget.

There are three main types of whitening:

  • At home or over-the-counter products
  • Professional take home kits custom made by your dentist
  • In-chair whitening performed by your dentist

Over-the-counter products contain far less concentrated materials than what a dentist can prescribe or uses in-chair. This means you’ll need to use store bought kits for a lot longer and with regular frequency to get noticeable results.

If you do choose to use at home teeth whitening products, we strongly recommend you book in with for a consultation. It’s important that before any teeth whitening products are used, the cause of your tooth discolouration is determined and it’s checked that there’s no decay that needs addressing – no one wants bleach in an open wound.

Professional whitening products use much higher concentration bleach meaning faster and longer lasting results. Take home whitening involves wearing custom trays made to fit your it takes approximately 7-10 days for the final results. White in-chair whitening is completed in one appointment and the results are instant.
Both have pros and cons, your dentist will help you decide which is the best option for you. You may experience sensitivity during or after whitening procedures, if this is of concern, please discuss it with your dentist at the time of your consultation.

It’s important to note that teeth whitening is most effective on clean and healthy surfaces, you should always have your teeth checked prior to starting any whitening treatment.

What If Teeth Whitening Isn’t Right For Me?

Teeth whitening isn’t always the most appropriate course of action for fixing discoloured teeth. Sometimes the underlying cause can’t be fixed with bleach and other avenues will need to be explored for a whiter smile. That’s why it’s important that you have a whitening consultation before deciding to move forward with any whitening treatment.

Certain types of teeth staining may not respond to whitening procedures particularly well.

Generally, whitening works best on yellow stains and not so well on grey surface stains.

If your teeth are discoloured but teeth whitening is not deemed appropriate, don’t despair!

There are always other options, such as composite or porcelain veneers.
